Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals is the class that we require all students who are new to the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu to first attend.  Here we focus on learning the basic movements and skills that are essential to progressing in jiu-jitsu and establishing a balanced game.

A typical 60 minute class consists of a light warm-up (which includes break-falls, safety get-ups, and hip escapes), 10 minutes of stretching, observing and drilling techniques involving various submissions, sweeps, escapes, take-downs, etc., then occasionally ending with specific training (a drill that simulates live sparring).

Currently new students may begin attending Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well as Submission Grappling classes after earning their second white belt stripe.  For committed students this level can typically be achieved within 3-6 months.

Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a class with which you may train within and refine your skills for life.  It is here where members begin to specialize, finding their own game and often becoming dominant top or bottom players.  Warm-ups are more relaxed but the concentration of drills and techniques becomes much more advanced involving sequences, deception, and other specialized BJJ strategy. Most 90 minute classes end with 30-45 minutes of smooth, controlled sparring using training rounds 5-7 minutes long (rolling).

Submission Grappling

Submission Grappling is essentially Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu minus the uniform (gi).   With typical gear consisting of just a form fitting rash guard and shorts, submission grappling is often referred to as no-gi jiu-jitsu.  Due to the lack of graspable clothing, this style of BJJ forces competitors to use a limited amount of body hooks and handles to subdue their opponents (rather than rely on the large number of hand grips and gi chokes available when wearing traditional uniforms and belts).

Kids BJJ provides children with the amazing benefits of jiu-jitsu, instilling in them self-defense, self-discipline, and self-confidence at an early age.  The class is led by assistant instructors Chris Mattock, Jonathan Liu, and Ben Whalley following a format similar to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals.  Student ages in this class range from 5 years up to 14.

Open Mat

Open Mat is a two hour open time period with no instruction allowing members to work on any aspect of their game that they desire.  The mat is often split between a variety of students practicing both gi and no-gi rolling as well as a few working together on specific training and conditioning.  Beginner students are permitted and encouraged to attend Open Mat in addition to their fundamental instruction.
